Heeding the call by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), BU GreenieS (BUGS) teamed up with Friends of the Earth to take part in the AFCD’s “Take Your Litter Home” campaign.

Professor Stuart Christie, Head of English Language and Literature and a member of the Task Force on Sustainable Campus led 30 BUGS volunteers to collect litter in Shing Mun Country Park on 24 January when the temperature was below two degrees Celsius, the coldest day in 60 years.

With the aim of encouraging citizens to reduce pollution and develop a habit of carrying away their own litter, the volunteers followed the tracks in the country park to pick up the litter that was left behind, classified the garbage, made records and brought the recyclables back to the city for proper recycling after the activity.

Established in 2013, BUGS is the first green voluntary team among local tertiary education institutions which aims to bring green messages to the community, improve the quality of the environment and contribute to global sustainability.
