Department of Marketing receives Hong Kong Jockey Club funding to promote responsible consumption culture

The Department of Marketing of the School of Business was awarded a grant of over HK$8 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to run a three-year educational conservation community programme entitled “Jockey Club Responsible Consumption Programme”. With three designated themes “ugly food”, “shopping bags and packaging reduction”, and “fast fashion”, a series of activities such as a secondary school marketing contest, an educational TV programme and a research project, will be conducted with the aim of promoting a responsible consumption culture in Hong Kong.
Officiating at the Programme Launching Ceremony cum Secondary School Marketing Contest 2018 on 24 June were: Mr Wong Kam-sing, Secretary for the Environment, HKSAR Government; Ms Imelda Chan, Head of Charities (Grant Making – Elderly, Rehabilitation, Medical, Environment & Family), The Hong Kong Jockey Club; Professor Roland Chin, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU; Ms Carmen Ng, Head of Consumer Education Division, Consumer Council; Ms Sandy Wong, Senior School Development Officer (Career Guidance Section), Education Bureau; Mr Howard Ling, Chief Consultant, HKCSS – HSBC Social Enterprise Business Centre; and Ms Kitty Ip, Vice-Chairman, Sounds Great Services Limited.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Roland Chin thanked the Environment Bureau and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust for their support. He hoped the programme would help educate and engage youth in responsible consumption behaviours, and raise their awareness of responsible consumption in order to build a green future together.
In her speech, Ms Imelda Chan said the Programme’s interactive learning model can encourage young people to adopt responsible consumption as well as utilise their creativity and the knowledge gained from the Programme to promote the topic to the community.
The ceremony also featured a preview of the educational TV programme jointly produced by HKBU, HKCSS – HSBC Social Enterprise Business Centre, and Sounds Great Services Limited. There will be four 30-minute episodes broadcast per year, for a period of three years, covering the designated themes.
Following the ceremony was the Secondary School Marketing Contest 2018 on this year’s theme “ugly food”. From among 35 teams formed by around 150 F3 to F5 students, Wa Ying College won the championship, “Most ‘Liked’ Award” and “The Most Creative Award”. The Contest was co-organised by HKBU, Education Bureau Business - School Partnership Programme, Consumer Council and HKCSS – HSBC Social Enterprise Business Centre.
