25 Jul 2017
The Department of Humanities and Creative Writing (HMW) of HKBU co-organised with the Academy of Arts and Design of Tsinghua University in Beijing and the Hong Kong Academy of the Humanities an exchange programme, “Arts and Creativity Exchange: Between Paintings and Creative Writing”, held from 26 June to 7 July on the Tsinghua campus.
The programme enables the Academy of Arts and Design to make its first attempt to chart a dialogue on interdisciplinary studies undertaken with an approach involving a creativity training camp. During the event a group of 10 HKBU HMW students, led by Department Head Professor John Erni, Assistant Professors Dr Dorothy Tse and Dr Christophe Tong, established a close and interactive relationship with 10 students from Tsinghua University.
During the programme, four academic seminars, namely “Limit and Game: Frank O’Hara + Xia Yu + Xixi”, “Hong Kong and France Contemporary Poets”, “Cy Twombly – The Painter of Poets”, and “Modernity of Calligraphy”, were respectively delivered by Dr Dorothy Tse, Dr Christophe Tong, Dr Feng Fan and doctoral candidate Ge Hualing of Tsinghua University.
The workshops provided students with opportunities to engage in exploratory and creative works through interdisciplinary collaboration. The creative works were showcased in an art exhibition at the end of the programme.
The Academy of Arts and Design of Tsinghua University plans to carry out a reform in art education by introducing a creative writing programme to the pedagogy of fine art. To enhance the teaching effectiveness of this experimental programme, the University invites HKBU’s HMW, which is the first institution in Asia offering an undergraduate programme in creative writing, to work together in the advancement of quality teaching through bilateral cooperation and exchange.
The second chapter of the exchange workshop will take place in 2018 in Hong Kong.
