HKBU’s Sino-Forest Applied Research Centre for Pearl River Delta Environment (ARCPE) and the Asia-Pacific Association for Sustainable Solid Waste Management co-organised the third International Conference on Solid Waste recently. This year’s Conference with a theme of Knowledge Transfer for Sustainable Resource Management was attended by more than 500 scholars and professionals from 57 countries. The three-day conference had a lineup of activities including more than 150 keynote speeches, oral presentations, over 170 poster presentations and a public forum.

At the opening ceremony, Mr Wong Kam-sing, Secretary for the Environment of the HKSAR, shared with the audience the waste management strategies and plans of Hong Kong. Dr Thet Thet Zin, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry of Myanmar, shared with the audience the waste management experience of Myanmar. In addition, Professor Nickolas Themelis, Columbia University of USA delivered a keynote speech on waste-to-energy.

The Conference incorporated a public forum entitled Sustainable Development of Hong Kong Recycling Industry. More than 250 local and overseas experts in the field of recycling shared their views on the recycling fund, recycling system and relevant technologies.
