Esteemed researcher shares vital role of movement and mobility in improving GISc technologies

Professor Michael Goodchild, Emeritus Professor of Geography at the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA, recently delivered a seminar on movement and mobility as part of the “How to Build Smart Society” series. The seminar was co-organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences, the International Office, the Department of Geography and the Centre for China Urban and Regional Studies.
Professor Goodchild is considered by many to be the “father of geographic information science (GISc)” In the seminar, he addressed the role of movement and mobility in the development of GISc and related technologies. Recent GISc advancements have allowed geographers to explore a suite of new research questions and remedy existing knowledge gaps.
Professor Goodchild also raised some of the challenges stemming from an increased reliance on technological solutions, namely the associated safety and privacy concerns. He also affirmed the significance of GISc in the development of smart societies, which will greatly help to enhance mobility.
