Scholar calls for improved interaction between sciences and social sciences in environmental health research
02 Jan 2019
The Faculty of Social Sciences and the David C Lam Institute for East-West Studies invited Dr Anne Roiko, Associate Professor of the School of Medicine at Griffith University in Australia, to deliver a lecture titled “How to Build Smart Society – Smart Water” on 20 December 2018.
Dr Roiko explained how early environmental health studies resulted in improvements in localised water supplies and wastewater treatment, mainly in the UK, but that it now focuses on research that makes use of a variety of epidemiological, toxicological and ecotoxicological methods. She also pointed out how the nature and scale of environmental health threats had changed in recent decades, reflecting the expansion of human populations and their impact on natural and built environments, thus requiring a new health paradigm.
