The Faculty of Social Sciences held a Cantonese opera fundraising show in the Academic Community Hall on 3 December in support of the Student Development Endowment Fund. The event was well attended by students, staff members and alumni from the Faculty as well as other members of the University.
While celebrating the 50th anniversary of its establishment, the Faculty set up the Student Development Endowment Fund in March this year. The Fund aims to provide financial support to outstanding students of the Faculty and students with financial difficulties, and it helps them participate in overseas exchange and experiential learning activities.
The event is privileged to have Mr Jackie Lo and Mrs Kalen Lo as the main sponsors, and it raised a total of HK$1 million. A cheque presentation ceremony was held during the show. It was officiated by Mr Jackie Lo; Mr Paul Poon, Deputy Chairman of the Council and the Court; Ms Rosanna Choi, Treasurer of the Council and the Court; Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor; Professor Rick Wong, Interim Provost; Dr Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning); Mr Wong Nga-chung, Honorary University Fellow; Mr Tyrone Siu, Honorary Court Member and President of the HKBU Alumni Association; Professor Daniel Lai, Dean and Professor Chung Pak-kwong, Associate Dean (Development) of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
In his speech, Professor Rick Wong expressed his deep gratitude to Mr Lo, Mrs Lo and the dignitaries of the community for their generous support. He said HKBU is committed to broadening students’ global vision and enriching their learning experience by providing them with overseas learning opportunities. The fund raised by the show enables students in need to fully realise their potential and pursue outstanding achievements in whole-person education, he added.
