Zhao Ling, PhD student of the School of Chinese Medicine, clinched the second prize for best conference paper at the 6th International Academic Conference on Gastroenterology organised by the Specialty Committee of Gastroenterology of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies.

Her prize-wining paper entitled “Metabolic Signatures of Human Functional Constipation” showed that patients with functional constipation generally have a higher level of plasma fatty acid amides (FAA) and a lower level of fatty acids (FA) compared with healthy individuals, and the downregulated ratios of FAs to FAAs were directly related to abnormal intestinal transit. These findings suggested that FAAs may be a group of potential metabolic biomarkers and treatment targets in functional constipation.

The 6th International Academic Conference on Gastroenterology was held in Shanghai recently and Zhao Ling presented her research at the youth forum of the conference.
