HKBU cross country teams excel in relay competitions
03 Apr 2018
HKBU cross country teams performed well in the PUMA Hong Kong Youth Relay and the Panasonic Pacers Charity Easter Run.
A total of two HKBU women’s teams took part in the PUMA Hong Kong Youth Relay 2018. Associate Degree Year 1 students Crystal Lau, Law Tsz-kwan, Fung Hiu-nam and Wong Suet-wing were the members of the winning team. Meanwhile, the other team, with members Ho Hiu-tung (Sport and Recreation Leadership, Year 2), Yip Chui-yee (Physical Education and Recreation Management, Year 3), Fong Ching-ha (Higher Diploma, Year 2) and Lin Qianlan (Associate Degree, Year 1), was the first runner-up.
Yip Chui-yee, the captain of the team, said that although the two-kilometre race in Central is not too challenging for long-distance runners, it enables team members to accumulate valuable competition experience and familiarise themselves with the route. Their coach enhanced training on short-distance running and team members also practised more in their free time in order to obtain an excellent result.
In the Panasonic Pacers Charity Easter Run, the team that comprised Ngai Tin-yan (Physical Education and Recreation Studies, Year 3), Lau Tsun-ling (Physical Education and Recreation Studies, Year 4), Lee Wing-yan (Higher Diploma, Year 1) and Lee Yuk-lam (Associate Degree, Year 1) won the championship title.
Ngai Tin-yan, the captain, said the team gained fruitful competition experience. To start with, the route was challenging, secondly every runner was required to run only one kilometre, therefore the competition tactic was different than the one they usually employ for long-distance races. Moreover, other institutions appointed elite athletes to join the competition which made it more competitive. Tin-yan attributed the win to teammates’ strong sense of commitment and engagement during the preparation for the race.
