Professor Liu Hongyu, Associate Head of the Department of Mathematics, was awarded the Hong Kong Mathematical Society Young Scholars Award 2019 by the Hong Kong Mathematical Society. The award was given in recognition of his significant contributions to the analysis and computation of inverse problems and imaging.

Professor Liu’s research into inverse problems can be widely applied in areas such as optics, radar, medical imaging and signal processing.

Professor Liu said he will continue his research endeavours in the fields of data analytics and artificial intelligence by incorporating mathematical tools from inverse problems. Data analytics and artificial intelligence are considered one of the strategic research development areas at the University.

The award is presented to scholars under the age of 45 who are working at local institutions in the fields of pure and applied mathematics and statistics. This year, only two award recipients were selected.
