Professor Zhu Lixing, Chair Professor of the Department of Mathematics of HKBU, was recently elected as a Fellow of the American Association of the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in recognition of his scientifically and socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications. This year, 391 members around the world have been named Fellows by the AAAS, with just two of them coming from Hong Kong. Professor Zhu is the only Hong Kong scholar awarded under the category of Statistics.

According to the AAAS Council, Professor Zhu was honoured for his outstanding contributions to statistics and probability, especially in the areas of dimension-reduction methods, goodness-of-fit testing, Monte Carlo tests, and empirical likelihood. He was also recognised for his statistics leadership in China, and for his overall outstanding service to the profession.

Professor Zhu said, “Research is always fundamental for science development and is also a great source of fun in life when we engage in it heartily.” His research has a variety of applications, including in economics and public health.

Professor Zhu has been showered with numerous accolades, including the Humboldt Research Award granted by The Alexander von-Humboldt Foundation of Germany. He was also selected as Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and by the American Statistical Association.
