Physical Education student shines at international squash competition
19 Mar 2018
Joey Chan (Physical Education and Recreation Management, Year 2) won the Silver Medal in the Salt Lake City Open held in USA, marking a strong start to this year’s competition season.
Joey, together with the Hong Kong team, took part in the Windy City Squash Open, then travelled to Salt Lake City alone. It was the first time she joined a competition without a coach or teammate, so before she travelled she had worried about her ability to plan everything by herself. However, she handled the training schedule and competition well and got along with members of the host family. Joey said it was not as difficult as she expected and found that her adaptability and problem-solving skills saw her through.
As a recipient of HKBU’s Elite Athletes Admission Scheme, education is always on Joey’s mind. As the competition coincided with the mid-term exam, Joey arranged alternate exam dates and ensured that she was up to date with learning materials. She expressed gratitude to her teachers and classmates who helped her catch up with study progress.
The Asian Games will be held this year and Joey will try to take part in as many competitions as she can in order to get a higher world ranking and better seed qualification to give her an advantage in the Asian Games.
