作者︰人文及創作系教授Jalal Toufic

Commissioned for the Singapore Biennale 2019 Online Symposium, Radical Closure gathers thinker and artist Jalal Toufic’s texts on his concept of radical closure (a “topical” subject in the time of COVID-19-induced quarantines). A radically closed space is one that is disconnected from its environs, but open to the diagram (for example, the Red Room in David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me), or to an unworldly elsewhere, or to nothing (the one referred to in the Latin ex nihilo, out of nothing). To leave such a space, one has to undergo all the possible permutations (in names, occupations, ages, etc.)—or repeat verbatim some received willed sentence (or movement, etc.), that is, some sentence (or movement, etc.) that is willed to recur eternally.
